We are running Back to Hockey sessions from Wednesday 16th May until 4th July from 8-9pm at University of Cumbria, £3 a session.

Morecambe had to battle hard to overcome a confident Golborne side at Blackburn Northern Sports Club.

Morecambe, winners of North West Division 3, were facing a Golborne side who have been storming through the divisions, securing three successive promotions and winning North West Division 6 North this season.

Morecambe began by confidently passing the ball around, but were under immediate pressure from Golborne, who were determined to show that they can challenge at a higher level.

Phil Molyneux and Craig Allison pushed forward on the right, but were thwarted in the early stages by a tenacious Golborne backline.

And the lower league side clearly showed plenty of promise, as they looked to catch Morecambe on the break and managed to create chances of their own, winning some early short corners.

However, Morecambe weathered the storm and began to take control, forcing mistakes from the opposition. As has become commonplace this season, the midfield pairing of Andy Crabtree and Player of the Year, Mike Sambell, commanded the centre of midfield, protecting the Morecambe rearguard and creating opportunities for the frontline.

And Morecambe’s strength in depth was evident when Senior Player of the Year, John Belshire, Most Improved Player, Joey Davidson and Tom Crackles emerged from the bench to continue their promising start.

The opening goal came when Morecambe took advantage of a brief moment of uncertainty from Golborne’s goalkeeper which allowed Rob Pritchard’s instinctive deflection to creep past him into the goal. It was a tough break for a spirited Golborne side, but just the platform Morecambe needed to build on.

However, Golborne did not allow their heads to drop and in the latter stages of the first half, Morecambe were given little space to extend their lead.

At the start of the second half, Morecambe were keen to extend their lead and a second goal began to look likely. Junior Player of the Year, Matthew Seddon was looking dangerous on the left, whereas goalkeeper Jack Lennon was becoming a virtual spectator, as any Golborne attacks were dealt with by Matt Bayley and Simon Mounsey.

And Morecambe got the breakthrough they needed when Nick Davey and Matt Wright exchanged passes on the left and Allison was given the opportunity to feed Steve Goodwin at the far post for a simple finish.

Morecambe pushed for a third before the end, but could not get past the Golborne goalkeeper, who they found in inspired form.

Morecambe will celebrate this summer, after a very successful season that has seen them win two competitions – and will look forward to Division 2 hockey and the Lancashire Cup next season.

Cumbria Debut For Andy Crabtree

Andy Crabtree made his debut for Cumbria against a Preston XI, on Sunday. He has also been selected for the County Championships in Nottingham, in May. Congratulations from all at M.D.H.C.

Charity hockey match supporting sponsor Morecambe Bay Physio

One off hockey match supporting our sponsors in completing a decathlon of different sporting events. Six players will be coming along to take part in this match having never/hardly played hockey before. We are fielding the rest of the players. This should be a fun social night, we have the pitch booked from 7-9pm, all support welcomed. Players should bring a light and a dark t shirt, white and yellow socks wherever possible so we can choose the teams on the night. But more important is a warm friendly manner!

Subs are £3 each and thanks to University of Cumbria Sports Centre for reducing the pitch cost!

Back to Hockey, Stick Amnesty

You may have a heard about an England Hockey initiative called Back to Hockey. This summer, with your help, we are planning on running these sessions at our club.

The aim is to get women back playing hockey again, more details can be found at

The first thing you can do to help is to search through your cupboards, shed, garage, stick bag, ask your family and friends for any spare adult hockey sticks that you would be able to donate to Back to Hockey.

I will be at the charity match on Wednesday and also at the AGM to collect any sticks, I’m sure any other member of the committee will take them off your hands also.

Congratulations to Captain Matt Wright and our men’s 1st team who have won the North West Division 3 title.

Their season is not over yet. They are through to the final of the Lancashire Trophy, to be held at Blackburn Northern Sports Centre on Saturday 31st March.

Morecambe will play Golborne Men’s 1st team, pushback at 12pm.

We wish our boys the best of luck!

Point Seals The Title

North West Hockey League Division Three.

Morecambe Men’s 1s 1 Timperley Men’s 2s 1

Morecambe have won the North West Division Three title, after a hard fought draw at the University of Cumbria.

Morecambe went into the game knowing that a point would be enough to secure the top spot – and Division Two hockey next season.

The home side started the game confidently and showed an outstanding workrate, as they threatened the opposition’s goal. And when possession was temporarily lost, Steve Goodwin and Nick Davey were influential in their desire to earn it back.

Morecambe might have thought they were on their way to a comfortable victory, when their early dominance paid off. A short corner resulted in Phil Molyneux drag-flicking the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to give Morecambe the advantage.

However, Morecambe were not allowed to show any complacency, as Timperley worked their way back into the game, equalising from a short corner of their own.

Morecambe steadied the ship before the interval, but went into half time knowing that there was much work to do.

At the start of the second half, Timperley looked like a different side and subjected Morecambe to wave upon wave of attacks. In the midfield, Andrew Crabtree and Mike Sambell worked hard at cutting out the early threat, whilst defenders Matt Wright, Simon Mounsey and Matt Bayley dealt confidently with the majority of Timperley’s attacking moves.

When the away side did breach the rearguard, goalkeeper Jack Lennon was on hand to make some outstanding stops, the pick of these being when he flung himself across the face of the goal to save, when the Timperley forward seemed to have a simple tap-in.

In the final stages, Joey Davidson threatened down the right, but Morecambe could not find a winning goal.

After four years in Division Three, Morecambe have worked tremendously hard, showing outstanding commitment to the cause – and fully deserve their promotion into Division Two.
