Hard Fought Point For Men’s 3rds

Kirkby Lonsdale Men’s  2   Morecambe Men’s 3rds  2

Kirkby Lonsdale climbed to the top of Div 9 North with this result but Morecambe again gave a stubborn account of themselves to get something from the game.

Kirkby opened brightly and pinned Morecambe in their own half but it was Morecambe who opened the scoring when, against the run of play, unmarked Jonathon Shaw beat the Kirkby keeper to finish a sweeping counter attack.

Undaunted, Kirkby continued to press forward but Morecambe’s obdurate defence again proved tough to crack and it was not until the second half that Kirkby’s pressure finally told when they scored with a penalty corner drag flick.

Morecambe could have buckled but instead began to push forward themselves and a penalty corner at Kirkby’s end was sweetly dispatched by skipper Andy Pilling to restore his side’s lead.

Kirkby’s youngsters continued to press all over the pitch and earned their reward when a defensive lapse gifted them an equaliser and set up a frenzied finale.

However, despite not holding on for victory, Morecambe went away with a point to add to the three taken off Kirkby last October – and Kirkby have only dropped five so far in their inaugural league campaign.
