Morecambe Mens Hockey 1st team progressed through to the final of the Lancashire Trophy following a convincing win over Blackpool mens 1st on Sunday.
Morecambe were out of the blocks quickly and immediately had Blackpool on the back foot. Simon Mounsey and Alex Belshire combined well on the right creating chances for Morecambe’s forward line.
Morecambe’s opener came from a short corner when Daniel Waterhouse fired a trademark drag flick high into the net.
Morecambe were soon two up when Matty Seddon span off his defender and fired a superb reverse strike across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner, giving the home side breathing space.
After the break Blackpool grabbed a lifeline from a stroke of good fortune, when a powerfully struck short corner deflected off a Morecambe stick and into the back of the net.
As the second half progressed, Blackpool began to impose themselves more on the game, but Morecambe’s defence were equal to the challenge and on the rare occasions they broke through the visitors found goalkeeper Matt Cook in fine form.
Morecambe wrapped up the game when Phil Hyman found himself free in the circle after some skilful play from Waterhouse, Hyman unselfishly found top scorer Phil Molyneux who evaded the Blackpool ‘keeper to finish calmly into the roof of the net.
The win secured, Morecambe cruised to the final whistle and now eagerly await the trophy final against local rivals Lancaster University.
